Murai Stool

The “Murai” stool won a prize at the 1st Woodworking Furniture Design Contest held by Tendo Mokko in 1961 andderives its name from the maiden name of its designer, Reiko Tanabe.
This piece features a simple yet elegant design that seamlessly combines three identical pieces of moulded plywood without using any hardware. Attention has been paid to the finishing details, with particular care taken to highlight the beauty of the teak wood grain as it converges at the centre of the stool.

Thanks to its flat upper surface, the “Murai” stool can be used stably in any orientation and serve as a seat and a side table. Furthermore, the stools are stackable, allowing for easy storage when not in use.

It won the Good Design Award in 1966 and the following year was selected into the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art – MOMA.
